Vyommitra – ISRO’s Space Humanoid for Gaganyaan

Introduction

  • Vyommitra is a halfhumanoid robot developed by ISRO to simulate human functions in space before astronauts are onboarded.
  • It performs simple tasks, monitors environmental parameters, and communicates with mission control.

Why in news?

  • ISRO will soon send Vyommitra aboard an uncrewed Gaganyaan test flight under India’s Human Spaceflight Programme.
  • This mission will precede India’s first manned space mission.

Background

  • The Gaganyaan vehicle in its crewed phase is designed to carry three astronauts to Low Earth Orbit at about 400 km for roughly three days.
  • Humanrating ensures spacecraft meet safety standards for human flight, using robots before astronauts.
  • Anthropomorphic testing uses humanshaped dummies or robots to simulate crew presence for realistic validation.
  • A microgravity environment enables assessment of how spacecraft systems behave in nearweightlessness.

Significance

  • Strengthens India’s indigenous human spaceflight capability under ISRO and the Department of Space.
  • Aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by advancing frontier technologies.
  • Reflects an ethical shift towards robotic testing over animal testing in space research.

Facts/General knowledge

  • Name: Vyommitra (Sanskrit: Vyoma – space; Mitra – friend).
  • Structure: Upper torso humanoid with head and arms; no legs.
  • Material: Lightweight aluminium alloy to withstand launch conditions.
  • Role in testing: Evaluates Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS), cabin pressure, microgravity effects, and crew interfaces.
  • Mission deployment: Will fly on an uncrewed Gaganyaan vehicle as part of precrew validation.

Mission Drishti – MultiSensor EO Satellite

Introduction

  • Mission Drishti is the world’s first satellite integrating multiple sensing technologies—Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Optical sensors—on a single platform, enabling realtime, allweather Earth Observation (EO).

Why in news?

  • Announcement of Mission Drishti’s launch, scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Background

  • Developed by GalaxEye Space, a Bengalurubased private space startup founded by alumni of IIT Madras.
  • Aims to provide multisource geospatial intelligence for applications in defence, disaster management, infrastructure, utilities, agriculture, and financial risk assessment.
  • Seeks to strengthen India’s datadriven governance and security capabilities.

Significance

  • Positions India as a global leader in private EO technology, enhancing its strategic and commercial space footprint.
  • Boosts Atmanirbhar Bharat and SpaceTech innovation, reducing dependence on foreign EO data.
  • Strengthens national capabilities in border surveillance, disaster prediction, and climate monitoring.

Facts/General knowledge

  • Highresolution imaging with 1.5metre resolution, among the highest in its category.
  • Weighs 160 kg, India’s largest privatelybuilt satellite to date.
  • AIdriven analytics enable advanced data fusion and geospatial insights for precision planning.
  • Constellation plan of 8–10 satellites to be launched over four years, forming an integrated global observation network.
