Grand Cross Award

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been honoured with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour by the Greek President, Katerina N. Sakellaropoulou. This is the highest civilian recognition that Greece can give to any foreign head of government. The award recognizes PM Modi’s exceptional contributions to promoting bilateral ties between India and Greece across various sectors. This milestone makes him the first Indian prime minister to receive this distinction and the first foreign leader to be recognized in this manner since 2017.


  1. The Grand Cross of the Order of Honor is the highest civilian award that can be awarded by the Greek government to a foreign head of government.
  2. PM Modi received this award for his outstanding contributions to the enhancement of bilateral relations between India and Greece.
  3. The award also recognizes his commitment in fortifying political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
  4. PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister and the first foreign government leader since 2017 to receive this honour.
  5. The badge features a gold-plated cross with a red enamelled medallion that bears the image of the Greek goddess Athena.
