• On 29th September, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) was observed, highlighting the urgent global problem of food waste. A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimatesaround 30% of global food production is wasted, which impacts food security and sustainability. Moreover, the issue is significant in India, with notably high post-harvest losses. The IDAFLW, established by the United Nations in 2019, aims to increase awareness, provoke action, and seek financial support to halve global food waste and minimise food losses by 2030. Different international incentive models are used to tackle food waste, including enhanced tax deductions for food donations in the US and financial benefits for businesses donating food to charities in Italy.
  • The 95th birth anniversary of Shyamji Krishna Varma, an esteemed Indian revolutionary, lawyer, and journalist, was commemorated by the Prime Minister. Varma, whose inspiration came from profiles like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Swami Dayanand Saraswati, established the Indian Home Rule Society and the 'The Indian Sociologist' journal whilst in London, inspiring Indian revolutionary activities against British rule. After facing British criticism, Varma settled in Geneva during World War I and remained there until his death in 1930. His significant influence was also felt in his role as the first President of the Bombay Arya Samaj.
  • The 92nd anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was recently celebrated with an airshow at Marina Beach, Chennai. The theme for this year was "Bhartiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar", signifying the IAF's commitment to self-reliance, power, and modernisation. The IAF, established on the 18th of October 1932, aligns with India's goal for robust defence capabilities, highlighted in its motto "Touch the sky with Glory". The significance of IAF was reassessed by the Chatfield Committee in 1939, proposing to raise five flights voluntarily for principal port defence.
  • World Cotton Day 2024, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Textiles, Cotton Corporation of India and CITI, focussed on the theme "Megatrends Shaping Cotton Textile Value Chain". The aim was to promote the cotton textile industry, address its challenges, and emphasise the importance of sustainability and traceability. The government set a textile export target of USD 100 billion by 2030. India, being the world's largest producer of cotton, makes up 23% of global production, and is the second-largest exporter after the United States.
  • World Food Day, which focuses on eradicating hunger and establishing resilient food systems, was observed recently on 16th October. The theme for 2024 is the Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future, marking the establishment of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. The World Food Day came into existence in 1979, and was endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1984. Furthermore, the WWF's Living Planet Report praised India's food consumption pattern as the most sustainable among G20 countries, proposing that adopting these patterns globally would minimise our planetary requirements by 2050 to 0.84 Earths.
  • The Prime Minister of India recently addressed a ceremony for International Abhidhamma Divas (IAD) and the recognition of Pali as a classical language. The event was organised by the International Buddhist Confederation and the Ministry of Culture. IAD honours Lord Buddha's descent from the divine celestial realm to Sankassiya, Uttar Pradesh, and his preaching of the Abhidhamma, first to the Gods and later to his disciple Sariputta. The event aligns with the conclusion of the annual three-month Theravada Buddhist monastic retreat during the monsoon season, known as Vassa.
  • The Samajik Adhikarita Shivir, a series of social empowerment camps providing aid to disabled persons and senior citizens, recently organised an event across 75 locations in India. This event, under the Assistance to Disabled Persons (ADIP) Scheme, successfully provided aids and assistive  devices  to  over  9000 pre-identified Divyangjan beneficiaries. Operated by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) since 1981, the scheme follows disability definitions given in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and receives funding from various agencies for the purchase and distribution of aids. Devices for rehabilitation are provided through the ADIP Scheme, with support for corrective surgeries prior to device allocation.
  • The Vice-President of India recently addressed the International Strategic Engagement Programme (IN-STEP) in New Delhi, advocating for multilateral cooperation to combat modern threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, and climate change. He stressed the significance of the 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' principle (the world is one family) for fostering cross-border unity and cooperation. IN-STEP serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and developing strategies against security challenges and is a joint initiative of the National Security Council Secretariat, Ministry of External Affairs, and Ministry

  • The 2024 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize was awarded to Alexander Dunn from the Georgia Institute of Technology, for his breakthroughs in the study of various mathematical forms and their links with prime numbers and integer partitions. The prize, including a cash award of USD 10,000, was established in 2005 by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) University, Tamil Nadu. It honours exceptional mathematicians under the age of 32, particularly in areas inspired by the work of esteemed mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who made pioneering contributions in number theory and more.
