Literacy rate in India: Bihar lowest at 61.8%, Kerala highest at 94%

According to the Ministry of Education's data, Bihar has the lowest literacy rate in India at 61.8%, followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. With a 94% literacy rate, Kerala tops the list, followed by Lakshadweep and Mizoram. The literacy rate in urban India, at 84.11%, is higher than in rural India, at 67.77%. To improve adult literacy rates, the Saakshar Bharat scheme was implemented in rural areas with a female literacy rate of 50% or less. The scheme aimed to increase the literacy rate to 80% and reduce the gender gap by the end of the XII five-year plan.
