Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended the subsidy of Rs 200 on LPG cylinders for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for another year. This scheme was initially launched in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to poor adult women and to make LPG available to rural and impoverished families. The subsidy amount is credited directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. As of March 1, 2023, there are over 9.59 crore beneficiaries who will receive the subsidy to cushion the impact of rising LPG prices. The average LPG consumption of PMUY consumers has increased by 20% from 2019-20 to 2021-22 and the total subsidy expenditure for 2023-24 is estimated to be Rs 7,680 crore.
