Project Nilgiri Tahr Tamil Nadu’s

Project Nilgiri Tahr, an initiative launched by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, is dedicated to the conservation, protection, and study of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr species. With a budget of ₹25 crore, the main objectives of the project include gaining a deeper understanding of the Nilgiri Tahr’s population, distribution, ecology, re-introducing the species to its historical habitats, identifying and mitigating immediate threats, and raising public awareness about this unique creature. Other key points include promoting eco-tourism and executing restoration activities. The project will be led by a team of experienced researchers and scientists. The Nilgiri Tahr has historical and cultural significance substantiated by ancient Tamil literature.
