Tamil Nadu’s 18th Wildlife Sanctuary

The 18th wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, has been declared by the state government. It covers 80,567 hectares in forest regions including Anthiyur, Bargur, Thattakarai, and Chennampatti, and is home to various wildlife species. The sanctuary will also serve as a connecting point between Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve and Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. The new status will enable more measures to be instituted, including additional anti-poaching camps, the removal of invasive species, and enhanced conservation efforts. Tribal communities within the sanctuary will continue to enjoy their rights under the Forest Rights Act.
